Claire – The Process

How I Work as a Planting Planner

I thought it might be nice to share a bit about how I work as a planting planner, because people often ask what actually goes into creating a planting scheme. Every project is different, but my approach is always the same. I like to take my time, listen carefully, and make sure the planting really suits the space and the people who will use it.

How I Got Here

Over the years I’ve worked on quite a few different projects, especially commercial gardens. Some have started from nothing at all, and others have already had planting in place that needed improving or refreshing.

What I’ve learned is that no two gardens are ever the same. The soil, the weather, the surroundings, and the people all play a part. Trends change too, and so do environmental conditions, so I’m always adjusting and learning as I go.

How I Like to Work

When I’m working on a planting plan, I like to focus on one project at a time. It helps me give each space the attention it deserves.

I can easily lose track of time once I’m deep into a plan. I enjoy that part of the process, when everything starts to come together and make sense.

I’m quite organised in how I work, but I also allow myself room to think creatively. Sometimes ideas appear when you least expect them.

My Working Environment

I nearly always have music on in the background while I work. It helps me settle into what I’m doing.

My desk is usually tidy, but my thoughts aren’t always! Designing planting can be a bit like putting together a puzzle, and I enjoy working through the pieces until they feel right.

What Matters Most to Me

The best part of my job is seeing a project grow from the first conversation to the final planting.

I really enjoy getting to know what a client wants from a space and then helping turn that into something real. Seeing a finished scheme come together, and knowing people will enjoy it for years to come, is very rewarding.

Where I Get My Ideas

I’m always looking and learning. I visit RHS gardens like Cliveden and Wisley whenever I can, and I go to garden shows when time allows. I also read quite a lot of gardening books and magazines.

All of that helps keep my ideas fresh, but I also draw a lot from my past projects and experience.

How My Approach Has Changed

Earlier on, I felt I had to stick to strict routines to get everything done. Now I know it’s better to slow down and focus on doing things properly.

I care much more about getting the planting right than getting it done quickly. Good planting takes time and thought.

I also try to make sure I look after myself outside of work. Spending time with family and getting outdoors helps me stay focused and enjoy what I do.

Looking Ahead

I’m always learning as I go. Every garden teaches me something new.

For me, planting planning isn’t just about choosing plants. It’s about creating spaces that feel calm, natural, and right for the people who use them. And I still find that just as satisfying now as when I first started.
