Evergreen Foliage Plants for Year Round Garden Interest

Claire – Evergreen Foliage Plants for Year Round Garden Interest

As a planting planner, one of the most common requests we receive is for gardens that look attractive throughout the year. While flowers provide wonderful seasonal colour, it’s often the foliage that forms the backbone of a truly beautiful garden. Evergreen plants are particularly valuable because they provide structure, texture, and colour even during the depths of winter.
As our climate continues to change and periods of drought become more frequent, choosing resilient plants is becoming increasingly important. Many evergreen foliage plants are well adapted to coping with dry conditions once established, making them a practical as well as beautiful choice for modern gardens.

At Root & Bloom Gardens, we love incorporating evergreen foliage plants into our planting schemes. Here are some of my favourites and why they deserve a place in your garden.

Euonymus japonicus (Japanese Spindle)
A versatile evergreen shrub that earns its place in almost every planting plan I create. Available in a variety of green, gold, and variegated forms, Euonymus provides reliable year round colour and structure.
It’s easy to maintain, works well in borders and containers, and can even be clipped into neat shapes.

Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’
A firm favourite with many gardeners, and for good reason. The vibrant red new growth provides a stunning display throughout spring and summer, while the glossy evergreen leaves ensure year round interest.
Whether used as a hedge, specimen shrub, or focal point, Red Robin never fails to impress.

Photinia ‘Pink Crisp’
For something a little different, Photinia ‘Pink Crisp’ offers striking variegated foliage with attractive pink, cream, and green tones. The colourful new growth adds brightness to borders and provides year round visual interest even when flowers are absent.
Its compact habit makes it suitable for a range of garden sizes, and it works particularly well as a feature shrub or as part of a mixed evergreen planting scheme.

Hebe.
Hebes are incredibly useful plants, offering evergreen foliage alongside attractive flowers. Their compact habit makes them ideal for smaller gardens, containers, and front borders.
Many varieties feature silver, blue/green, or variegated foliage, adding colour even when not in bloom.
They come in all sizes from small ‘Globe’ Hebe to larger variety’s.

Cordylines.
When I want to create drama and architectural impact, Cordylines are often my first choice. Their bold, upright foliage creates a striking focal point and adds a strong structural element to the garden.
Available in shades of green, bronze, purple, and variegated forms, they bring year round interest and work beautifully in both contemporary and traditional planting schemes.
Cordylines are also well suited to coping with periods of drought once established, making them an excellent choice for climate resilient planting.

Pittosporum tenuifolium
Pittosporum offers beautiful glossy foliage in shades ranging from lime green to deep purple-black. The contrast it creates with flowering plants is exceptional.
Varieties such as ‘Golf Ball’ and ‘Tom Thumb’ are particularly useful for adding architectural interest without becoming overwhelming in smaller gardens.
Many Pittosporums are also remarkably tolerant of dry conditions once established, making them increasingly valuable in gardens experiencing hotter, drier summers.

Skimmia japonica
Perfect for shaded gardens, Skimmia offers glossy evergreen foliage, fragrant flowers, and colourful berries.
It’s an excellent choice for bringing life to darker corners where many other plants struggle to thrive.

Santolina
The silver grey foliage creates a wonderful contrast against green plants and colourful flowers. Drought tolerant and easy to maintain, it’s particularly useful in Mediterranean inspired planting schemes.
The foliage remains attractive throughout the year and releases a pleasant fragrance when brushed against.

Why Evergreen Foliage Matters
A garden built solely around flowers can often feel empty outside the flowering season. Evergreen plants provide the framework that keeps a garden looking attractive every month of the year.
They are also becoming increasingly important as weather patterns change. By incorporating drought tolerant evergreen plants into your garden, you can create planting schemes that require less watering, remain resilient during dry spells, and continue to provide year round interest despite challenging conditions.

By combining different foliage colours, textures, and forms, it’s possible to create planting schemes that remain beautiful even in winter. Flowers then become an added bonus rather than the sole focus.
At Root & Bloom Gardens, I believe successful planting plans start with strong evergreen structure. The right combination of foliage plants creates a garden that looks good every day of the year, not just during peak flowering season, while also helping future proof your garden for a changing climate.
