Ravi is a keen gardener with a wonderful eye for detail and a love of beautiful planting, but the borders lacked the depth, structure and seasonal interest that comes from a professionally designed planting scheme. They also demanded more maintenance than she wanted.

Ravi’s brief was refreshingly simple: enhance what was already there, creating deep, richly layered borders that would look stunning throughout the seasons while remaining easy to care for – so we stepped in to help!

Your Garden Doesn’t Need Starting Again. It Might Just Need Better Planting.

How we gave Ravi’s established garden a new lease of life with a fresh planting scheme.

Not every garden needs ripping out and starting again.

Sometimes the bones are already there. Mature trees, established shrubs, decent borders and plants that have spent years earning their place.

They just need a bit of help.

That was exactly the case with Ravi’s garden.

Keep the Good. Improve the Rest.

Ravi already had a mature garden with plenty going for it, but some of the borders had become tired and disconnected.

So rather than redesigning everything, we worked with what was already there.

We kept established plants that were doing a good job, removed or worked around those that weren’t, and then designed new planting to bring the whole garden together.

The aim was simple: more colour, more texture, more structure and a garden that felt properly planted again.

Then Came the Plants…

Quite a few plants, actually.

We selected a mixture of shrubs, perennials, architectural plants and foliage, thinking not just about what looked good on planting day, but what the garden would look like in one, two and five years.

We used contrasting greens, burgundies and silvers, repeated plants through different areas and created layers of different heights.

That repetition is important. It makes separate borders feel connected and turns a collection of plants into an actual planting scheme.

It’s What’s Underneath That Counts

New plants are only half the job.

Ravi’s borders were prepared with plenty of fresh organic material before planting, followed by a generous mulch afterwards.

As the photos show, this involved a frankly ridiculous number of bags.

But soil preparation matters.

It gives new plants the best possible start, helps retain moisture and improves the soil over time.

Spend hundreds or thousands on plants and stick them into poor soil and you’re simply buying expensive compost-bin ingredients.

The Best Bit? It Gets Better.

A newly planted garden isn’t really finished.

It’s just begun.

The gaps you can see in Ravi’s new borders are deliberate. As the plants establish they’ll spread, soften the edges and begin growing into one another.

Each year the garden should become fuller, richer and more natural.
